Your story of the 5100 and its pictures reminded me of the Datapoint 3300 (1970, San Antionio Tex). It’s interesting how IBM chose to put the screen on the left, as Datapoint did – why not on the right?

What a great series you’ve done (are doing), thank you.

Well, I didn’t post it because I couldn’t find great photos, but the way the machine opens up and the way the components are laid out fixed the size and position of the CRT. The system uses a backplane that’s mounted upside down vertically in the case. That backplane is on a hinge so it folds out for easy maintenance. The system is large enough that no extra room exists in any direction. The CRT fits and the tape drive fits, and then there’s all the cards. I’ll update the article if I can find a decent image.

The Datapoint is an interesting machine. I’ll need to cover it at some point if I can find enough source material.

Thank you for your kindness!

There is a pretty good book on it, and a little in my book I can send to you if you would like it.
