I’d like to point out one thing, here in 2025.
UNIX (of the BSD variety) is still VERY much here. It’s on every Apple Device. It’s the OS running more than half the cars on the road.
It’s in the video cards and even SOCs on your pc peripheral boards.
It’s in light bulbs and appliances and remote controllers.
If I may take a wild (and partial) leap… I’d say 99% of electronic in modern use are represented by 49.9/49.9 BSD and Linux.
Windows may own the PC market (for now) but it’s virtually non-existent anywhere else.
